Archive reconstruction

The original Political Hurricane article body is missing. A contemporary Florida Squeeze article preserves the central numerical finding and credits Dave Trotter’s Political Hurricane analysis, allowing the core result to be restored without recreating missing commentary.

The Political Hurricane published this analysis on January 2, 2017 after breaking the 2016 presidential vote down by Florida Senate district.

The central finding survives in contemporary coverage: Hillary Clinton was only 558 votes away from a 20–20 split in terms of the number of Florida Senate districts she carried.

The Florida Squeeze cited Dave Trotter’s Political Hurricane work the next day while arguing that Florida Democrats had missed a substantial opportunity in the 2016 state Senate elections. It noted that Democrats returned to Tallahassee with only 15 Senate seats even though the presidential vote was much more competitive across the Senate map.

The same contemporary citation also highlighted one striking district-level comparison: according to the Political Hurricane analysis, the seat held by FDP chair candidate Dwight Bullard had been carried by Clinton with 56.4% of the vote, while Bullard received only a little over 40% in his own race against Republican Frank Artiles.

The full original tables and district-by-district methodology have not been recovered, so this archive reconstruction preserves the findings quoted by the contemporary source rather than recreating the dataset from hindsight.
